How Are Dental Crowns Placed?
Numbing
Once you are determined to be a good candidate for a custom crown, Dr. Carlin will apply local anesthesia to numb the treatment site. Some patients might also choose to undergo sedation.
Preparation
In order for a dental crown to be placed over your natural tooth without appearing bulky or impacting your bite, part of the tooth's structure will need to be removed.
Temporary Restoration
Once the outer portion of your tooth has been modified, an impression will be taken and you will be fitted with a temporary crown. This temporary crown will protect your tooth structure from further damage.
Permanent Crown
During a second appointment, Dr. Carlin will remove the temporary crown. Then he will check the fit of your permanent custom porcelain crown before placing it using a strong bonding agent.
Final Adjustments
Lastly, your dentist will make minor adjustments as needed to ensure that the prosthetic does not interfere with your bite and looks completely natural.
Are You a Candidate?
Most of our patients who seek the restorative or cosmetic benefits of dental crowns at our Hendersonville, TN, dental practice are good candidates for the treatment. Candidates for this dentistry treatment often have advanced decay or a missing tooth. If you are missing consecutive teeth, you may be a better candidate for a dental bridge. To receive a crown, there must be an adequate amount of enamel to support the prosthetic. Otherwise, the tooth may need to be removed. Those who are considering dental implants should also have adequate jawbone density to support the posts. Dr. Carlin will assess your health history, concerns, and goals during your consultation to recommend the best course of action.
I love Dr. Carlin! I went for my second visit today. He did an amazing job! I've had a lot of dental work done in the past and he is by far my favorite! I would recommend him to anybody. The staff is also very friendly and helpful!
View On Google +Dr. Carlin and his staff are awesome! They were able to run down the information for an implant that I had started over 10 years ago and had to abandon before the crown could be applied. He was the only dentist I had tried that took the time and made the effort to find what he needed to finish the job. I now have a full set of teeth and would recommend him to family and friends without hesitation. Thank you Dr. Carlin!

One question we hear at our Hendersonville, TN, dentist’s office is, “Am I too old for dental crowns?” No matter what your age, young or older, dental crowns are a safe and effective treatment for restoring a weak tooth or brightening a discolored or misshapen tooth for cosmetic reasons.
If you have any concerns regarding any of our restorative dentistry procedures, rest assured that Dr. Carlin is known for his warm and caring personality. He will be glad to explain any aspect of this dental treatment during your visit. We offer a range of treatment options to meet our patients' varied needs.
Do I Need to Prepare for My Dental Crown Placement?
Patients should be in good oral health before having a porcelain crown placed. Gum disease or decay can still affect the underlying tooth structure, especially the root, of a treated tooth. That is one reason why you will need to address any gum disease at our practice before your procedure while maintaining good oral hygiene habits after your crown placement.
There is no recovery time required after the temporary crown or permanent crown has been placed, but many patients experience mild side effects, such as heightened temperature sensitivity, in the days following treatment.
When properly maintained, the prosthetic can last several years or longer. In addition to maintaining healthy habits, the long-term success of a crown is highly dependent on the skill of the dentist and Dr. Carlin's crowns are particularly long-lasting.
Understanding Your Treatment Cost
The average cost for this procedure is $1,000 to $1,300. Dental insurance often covers part or all of the procedure if it is performed for restorative purposes. We also accept CareCredit® financing to cover any out-of-pocket costs.
